Who knows?! Because I’m 50, I think I’m getting back to that love at first sight thing, that it does happen, pure electricity, and you can feel it in your performances. Not make it so whimsical, it can be really serious and really scary. It is a tragic ending, and it fills me with life. There are a lot of trap doors a lot of actresses could fall into. Even Juliet is kind of put on a pedestal as the virginal statues that are all around us, and yet in her, and what I experienced with her, is this huge strength, and an empathy, you know? I really was hungry to do a story with love. JO: Honestly, on EMMA. It was our whole world where we could live together and no one would ever know. At the very least, he does have an idea about what he wants his future to look like, and "it's nice, in the country, with fires and ... toast," the star told The Standard. That is so interesting. The film world is meeting the theatre world, and our cinematographer was in rehearsals with us from the beginning, and he was being inspired by seeing us in a rehearsal room of how he might shoot it, and he equally was inspiring us by being like ‘Oh that reminds me of a Caravaggio painting.’ And even the lighting department, they had access to the most incredible lighting team in the world, because the theater is totally raked for space, and the stage managers were having a relationship with the script supervisors who they had never met before, and there was a kind of unknown ability about that, and people were very raw and exposed in all of that, because they had to let go of what they’ve always known and try to experience something completely new like that. You don’t have to go into any personal details, but I just find that fascinating. But more just fears for the theatre, fears for the fact that it will be, I believe, one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had, and partly because it was with these two amazing people, Jessie and Simon, and the company, they were all incredible. Were there things that you were surprised about in yourself that came out playing these characters? When I was a teenager I played a lot of football, it was pretty much my dream until the whole acting garb came along and put a spanner in the works (that and the fact that I wasn’t THAT good with a football.....). It was so beautiful. I know Jessie was. AdW: Because Shakespeare was very much occupied in England, for many years, within a certain proper way of speaking. AdW: The violence and the way it was shot, it was so nice feeling like it was being worked out in the theater. AdW: And I just thought it was such a strong beginning that I was immediately excited to see the process, but not distracted by it.
